It’s the end of another perfect Lake County day. The sun sheds an orange glow across the water of Clear Lake. Off in the distance, the rise of Mt. Konocti reaches high above the waters. Waves splash on the beach as a boat passes, pulling a wakeboarder. A palm tree stands between the water and the patio, binging a tropical feel. It could be one of many places in the world: Tuscany, Greece, Chile, Spain. But you’re not at any of those places. You’re enjoying The Spot in Clearlake.

Inside, the floor’s covered in red and white checked tiles, complete with diner bars tools and retro art on the walls. It’s like stepping back in time. But tonight, the outdoor patio is the place to be. dr Groove, a favorite local Lake County band, starts their first set for the evening. “You, my brown-eyed girl,” is all it takes for chairs to empty and the dance floor to fill. There’s no such thing as too young or too old to dance at The Spot, a local favorite for families. It’s still early in the evening, and the dance floor will fill up as the night continues.

Right now, it’s time to kick back, sip on that first beer, and enjoy some of The Spot’s famous food. Just take a look at the menu. You can enjoy one of their spectacular chicken sandwiches, a stuffed-to-the-brim baked potato, or even their off-the-hook fish and chips. But the menu really shows its colors in the burger section. Now, several places in Lake County make great burgers, but The Spot’s at the top of the list. What’s your idea of a good burger? The Spot’s got it. Of course, they have the traditional burger, consistently well-made. But, if you’re curious, you can try the PB & J Bacon Cheddar burger, a uniquely spectacular combination of meat, cheese, peanut butter, and jelly. Or, if you’re in the mood for some happy heartburn, the Open-Face Chili Burger’s a good option. But, for a fantastic flavor combination that’s easily twice your daily caloric intake, try the Blue Cheese Bacon Burger. It’s too large to fit in most human mouths. The patty’s perfectly grilled then topped with bacon, blue cheese, onion, lettuce, and tomato. It’s a drippy delight, easily worthy of two or three napkins. For a bit of extra flavor, be sure to add some jalapenos. Sure, the food’s good, but remember, there’s also regular live music. Mike Guarniero, singer and guitarist for Dr. Groove, breaks into your personal moment with your burger.

“Thank you all for coming out tonight,” he begins. “You know, this is one of the only places in Clearlake that regularly hosts live music, and our band members all lives in Clearlake, so we really like not having to drive so far for a gig!” Hey laughs. “Anyhow, thanks for supporting local music and this establishment.”

As the band begins again, it’s hard to tear away from the few remaining onion rings, but you can’t help it. You have to get up and join in the fun. The sun’s taken its rest for the day. Off in the distant hills, lights twinkle in the rapidly darkening sky. But the night is still young, the bar’s still serving, and there’s lots more music and dancing left in the evening.
