The American College of Cardiology and Association of Black Cardiologists have announced the installation of new their new presidents, Edward TA Fry, MD, FACCfor the ACC, and Anekwe E. Onwuanyi, MD, FACC, for the ABC.

Edward TA Fry

Fry is an interventional and general cardiologist at Ascension Indiana St. Vincent Heart Center in Indianapolis and chair of the Ascension National Cardiovascular Service Line. Fry previously served as vice president of the ACC, president and governor of the Indiana ACC Chapter and as a member of the ACC board of trustees and MedAxiom’s board of managers.

“I am looking forward to learning from and working with ACC’s members as they lead transformational cardiovascular care to improve heart health and close gaps in access, value, experience, wellness and equity,” Fry said in a press release.

Anekwe E. Onwuanyi

Onwuanyi, professor of medicine and chief of cardiology at Morehouse School of Medicine, medical director of the heart failure program at Grady Memorial Hospital and co-chair of Grady Heart and Vascular Center in Atlanta, was installed as president of the ABC during the Spring 2022 membership meeting. Onwuanyi previously served as president-elect and board member of the ABC, assistant editor of the ABC Digest of Urban Cardiologychairperson of scientific symposia and a member of ABC’s Preventive Cardiology Committee.

“I look forward to continuing the ABC work that has had such a strong impact and building on the accomplishments of my predecessors whose outstanding leadership and vision have shaped the organization ABC is today,” Onwuanyi said in a press release. “We must now double our efforts due to the increasing burden of the health care needs and mortality in communities of color as has been laid bare by the COVID-19 pandemic. ABC’s strident leadership, capabilities and strengths spanning nearly half a century remain our North Star in facing the challenges and opportunities ahead. ”

Malissa J. Wood

In addition, the ACC announced Malissa J. Wood, MD, FACCCathy E. Minehan Chair of Cardiovascular Disease in Women and co-director of the Corrigan Women’s Heart Health Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, will chair the ACC board of governors and serve as secretary of the board of trustees from 2022 to 2023.

The ABC also announced its new board chair, Barbara Hutchinson, MD, PhD, FACCpresident of Chesapeake Cardiac Care in Annapolis, Maryland, and past president of the ABC.
